CEO Column | AI Fluency: The Most Critical Workplace Skill of the Next Decade
For the past twenty years, computer skills have been the baseline requirement at work: knowing Word, Excel, presentations and email was basic competence. If you didn’t, you wouldn’t necessarily be eliminated right away, but it was hard to enter a high-efficiency work environment. Over the next decade, this baseline will be replaced by another ability: AI fluency.
AI fluency does not mean knowing how to open ChatGPT, bookmarking lots of prompts, knowing the names of many AI tools, or chasing the latest models and software every day. Real AI fluency is whether you can use AI to complete work results.
Bosses need to use AI to break down business models.
Managers need to use AI to design processes.
Salespeople need to use AI to produce proposals.
Marketers need to use AI to create content and assets.
Teachers need to use AI to design courses.
Consultants need to use AI to organize knowledge and deliver results.
Entrepreneurs need to use AI to build an MVP quickly.
This is not a skill only engineers need; it will become the basic language of all knowledge workers. Just as English fluency determines whether a person can enter the international market, AI fluency will determine whether a person can enter high-efficiency, high-output, highly competitive workplaces.
But there is a harsh reality here: many people think they are learning AI when they are really only learning tools. Tools change, models change, platforms change; what is hot today may be replaced in half a year. What will not be eliminated are the underlying abilities: the ability to break down requirements, design tasks, plan processes, verify outputs, make business judgments, identify risks and iterate repeatedly. Together these abilities are what AI fluency means.
The competition of the future is not “do you use AI,” but “can you use AI to produce verifiable results.” This will gradually become a watershed in the workplace. People who can use AI are not necessarily stronger, but those with AI fluency will begin to pull ahead.
